Instruction for authors

Instructions for authors are also printed in the first issue of each volume.

The Open Access journal Genetics Selection Evolution publishes original articles, review articles and notes.

SUBMISSION OF ARTICLES

The standard procedure for submitting a paper to GSE is to send a single electronic folder or file of the article through the Manuscript Management System (MMS), as described below.

1. Registering your manuscript on the MMS

In order to register your new submission, you need to enter your author identifier. This is a unique and confidential number that is attributed to you upon your first submission to GSE. If you have submitted a paper to GSE before, you already have an author identifier. If you publish regularly with us, it is a good idea to note your author number for future reference.

If you are a new GSE author, you will be asked to fill out a registration form and an identifier will be attributed to you.

If you have forgotten your author identifier, go to
https://mms-inra.edpsciences.org/is/gse/
Click on 'Submit a paper' (on the left side of the page) and follow the link for retrieving your number. You will be asked to enter your e-mail address and your identifier will be mailed to the given address if MMS finds a correspondence between the e-mail address you entered and a GSE author.

If you have recently changed your e-mail address, do NOT fill out a new registration form, but instead contact the Editorial Office at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and your author identifier will be communicated to you.

2. Uploading your manuscript file

You are requested to prepare the different versions of the manuscript strictly according to the GSE recommendations given below. If more than one file is necessary, please compress the different files into a single ZIP file.

For the first version of the manuscript, please submit preferably a PDF file but RTF or WORD files are also accepted.

For the final version, please upload the manuscript both as a PDF file and a LATEX, RTF or WORD file.

For the figures and tables, EPS, PS, TIFF or PPT files are accepted.

This single compressed folder should then be uploaded through the MMS at https://mms-inra.edpsciences.org/is/gse/

In the menu on the left side of the page, please click on 'Submit a paper' for the first version of the manuscript or on 'Resubmit your manuscript' for a revised or final version of the manuscript.

The different versions will be automatically renumbered.

GENERAL PRESENTATION

The text should be in the Times font (12) and should be double-spaced, with margins of 4 cm at the top, bottom and sides for the editor’s comments. The lines and the pages should be numbered.

The layout of the text should be presented as follows: Title page, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Figure captions, Tables and Figures.

The total length of the manuscript should not exceed the equivalent of 18 pages including the tables and figures. Section headings should be numbered following the international numbering system (1.; 1.1.; 1.1.1., etc.). The tables with their captions should not appear in the text, but they should be placed together at the end. The figures should be placed in a separate file. Uppercase letters should be accented; small capitals should not be used.

Title page

The title page should include the following: the title of the article, which should be concise but explicit, the surname and forenames (in full) of each author, the department and institution where the study was carried out, telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address of the corresponding author (this author being identified by an asterisk), a short title (running head) of no more than 45 characters, including spaces.

Abstract

The abstract (not more than 200 words) should clearly state the major results of the work, and it should be in a suitable form for abstracting services. Paragraphs, footnotes, references, cross-references to figures or tables and undefined abbreviations should be avoided.

Keywords

Up to five keywords should be provided. Keywords may be taken from the title, abstract or text. The plural form and uppercase letters should be avoided. Keywords should be written in bold lowercase letters, separated by slashes.

Parameters and units

Only ISO symbols, always written in italics, should be used for the various parameters. SI units should be used throughout, and should always be written in the Roman alphabet and separated from the numerical value by a space. The m in mg or mm is always in the Roman alphabet. The symbol for liter is L and that for minute is min. For temperatures, please note the use of °C and °F but K. Multiples and submultiples should be standard. Since the Angström (1 Å = 10-10 m) is not a SI unit, it should be replaced by the nanometer (1 nm = 10-9 m) or by the picometer (1 pm = 10-12 m): 1 Å = 0.1 nm = 100 pm. Multiple units should be written with negative superscripts (for example, 25 mg · L-1 · s-1).

Genes, loci, mutations and markers

The symbols used to name genes, loci, mutations and markers should be written in italics in the text, figures and tables.

Equations and numbers

Equations should be carefully typed. Those that are referred to in the text [in the form: equation (1), for example] should be numbered using Arabic numerals, in brackets, on the right-hand margin. Ponctuations should be used at the end of an equation. Vectors and matrices should be represented in bold characters. Particular care should be taken to distinguish between the number zero (0) and the letter O; the number one (1) and the letter l (l), the Roman letter v and the Greek letter nu (n). The decimal logarithm should be written 'log' and the natural log 'ln'. The abbreviation of the exponential function is a Roman e (for example, ex) or exp (for example, exp (u2 + n )). In expressions of the type dxdt, the letter d (derivative function) is always written in Roman, whereas the physical parameter (x or t) is always in italics. Numbers are written as numerals when they are followed by units, these being represented by their SI symbols (10% but a few percent). In numerals, each group of three digits should be separated by a space (except for dates and postal codes). In English, a decimal point is used instead of a comma.

References

In the reference list, the references appear in alphabetical order, preceded by an Arabic numeral enclosed in square brackets. The authors’ names are listed in alphabetical order, and in chronological order for each author. If there is more than one author, the order is as follows: publications of the same author with one co-author, in alphabetical order of the second author, and in chronological order; publications of the author with more than one co-author, in chronological order.

The references are cited in the text by the corresponding number enclosed in square brackets.

All entries in the reference list must correspond to references in the text and vice versa. When authors are cited in the text (within a phrase and not just between brackets), the spelling of the authors’ names must be exactly the same as in the reference list.

The titles of the journals should be abbreviated according to the rules of Biosciences Information Service (Biosis). Words for which no abbreviation is given should be written in full.

Examples of the layout and punctuation to be used in the references are given below:

Illustrations (figures and tables)

Illustrations should be numbered in Arabic numerals for figures and Roman numerals for tables, and should be referred to as Figure 1 or Table I in the text, Fig. 1 or Tab. I in brackets. The numbering of the tables must not be combined with that of the figures. Lettering (symbols, numbers, etc.) should not differ from figure to figure and should be of sufficient size to remain legible after reduction (letters 1–2 mm high after reduction). Photographs should be presented in the form of plates to be reproduced without reduction (maximum size 12 × 19 cm). The lettering (height 1–2 mm) should not be placed any closer to the edges than 1 cm. The figure captions should be explicit so that the illustrations are comprehensible without reference to the text. The author should indicate the ideal position of the tables and figures.

Tables should not exceed 84 characters per line (140 if in landscape format). The title of each table should be written above the corresponding table. Figures and tables published elsewhere cannot be accepted without the prior consent of the publisher and the author(s).

The Editorial Board retains the right of returning, before evaluation, manuscripts to authors who do not comply with these recommendations.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent by e-mail to the corresponding author. They should be carefully corrected and returned to the publisher within 48 h of reception. The PDF file of the article will be provided free of charge to the corresponding author.

Copyright

Authors retain copyright and agree that anyone is free to copy, distribute or display the work provided that the original authors are given credit.
